The world is more than a little crazy and has been for several years now. I forgot what it felt like for world events to feel mundane between the COVID-19 pandemic, the Judicial Reform protests here in Israel, the October 7 massacres and the ensuing years of war.
Not to mention political drama elsewhere in the world.
It’s a lot to deal with on any given day and one of the topics I choose to dedicate at least some of my attention to as a sort of antidote to all the Crazy World Stuff is wonderful, cool science stuff.
A relatively recent find (for me at least) is this wonderful podcast called The Joy of Why Podcast by Quanta Magazine.
The topics are really interesting and not so technical that you need an advanced degree just to keep up. I’m really enjoying this podcast and I love that they also publish full transcripts on the website.
Another recent item that I enjoyed is Hank Green’s video titled “This Planet is…Up to Something“. It very much reminds me of Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot” piece.
I feel that if more of us spent more time looking up and around at the wonder of the natural world, and paying attention to our place in it, perhaps we would live somewhat less stressful, divisive, and unhealthy lives.
Maybe.
