The short version
I am an experienced writer, content marketer and strategist with some experience in project management. My career spans legal services, content marketing (with emphasis on the social Web) and business development. I have more than a decade’s experience in social marketing (social media driven marketing) and was South Africa’s first social media legal expert.
I am also an amateur photographer. My photography is one of my primary forms of personal expression that is partly about documenting my life and experiences and partly about sharing ideas and concepts.
The longer version
Writing is one of the ways I express my thoughts and feelings. My passion for expressing myself and my ideas in writing helped me to write better legal documents as a lawyer in my previous career. This blog contains contains most of my writing since I started blogging in December 2004.
When I think about work and its role in my life I usually think about two quotes. The first has been used so much it is practically a cliché. It is a quote from the philosopher and poet, Kahlil Gibran from his book “The Prophet“. When asked about the nature of work he includes the following as a response:
Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit by the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy
I came across the second quote in a video by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories titled “Seven Minutes of Terror: The Challenge of Getting to Mars” which was taken from Theodore Roosevelt’s “Strenuous Life“. Roosevelt said:
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
These two ideas, “work is love made visible” and “dare mighty things” guide me when I choose my work. It isn’t always easy to find or create work that has these two great qualities but it is something worth striving for.
I moved to Israel with my family in December 2014 and changed my career to focus on content marketing. I am enjoying my new focus as a writer, marketer and general social media enthusiast. When I am not working, I usually have my camera in my hands and spending time with my family.
I love good sci-fi and science shows. I am a huge superhero fan (mostly DC Universe but I’m coming around to Marvel) and am really more of a Star Trek person than Star Wars (fortunately my wife is too).
We live in Modi’in, Israel.
I have a severe allergy to stupid, it’s acting up a lot lately.
