Pundits have been debating whether Apple will merge Mac OS and iOS into a single, unified OS for all Apple devices smarter than an iPod classic for a little while now. It probably isn’t something that will happen any time soon with the recent Mac OS 10.7 announcement but wouldn’t it be interesting? Just like this quote from Apple’s Phil Schiller in the press release about WWDC 2011:

“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”

Microsoft is apparently planning on unifying its OS’s in Windows 8. I’ve heard that Windows phones will run Windows 8 alongside desktops and other devices in between. I suppose that sort of unified underlying OS could theoretically happen as hardware becomes more powerful and smarter. It could be very interesting.

Yup I was thinking the same thing. It really is only a matter of time until they merge and have one OS across all devices!
