Nicely put. We’re already paying so many extra levies for fuel, we should be getting freshly surfaced roads every year, but adding a few cents to each litre makes it fair and far easier to manage. The more you drive the more you pay and if you’re using a light weight energy efficient vehicle then you’ll pay less, but you’ll also result in less wear and tear on the roads.

I have a similar feeling towards taxes. Ban all taxes and force all businesses to be VAT registered, increase VAT. Then everyone in the country would be paying taxes and their contribution would be proportionate to their spending. If you’re thrifty and don’t spent money, you’ll save on taxes. Simple to implement and means no more, PAYE, SDL, Workmans comp, income tax, provisional tax, simply Monthly VAT returns for all businesses.
