Helen Zille responds to my open letter

Helen Zille, leader of the Democratic Alliance (dominant opposition party in South African politics) has responded to my open letter to her which I published on this blog. Many thanks to Helen for taking the time to respond to my letter. It isn’t often that public officials take time to speak to the little people outside of an election season, certainly not the rants of a lone blogger.

The many initiatives the DA proposed should really have been pursued years ago by Eskom and the government itself and it is shameful that things have deteriorated to the point they have. It struck me that if we had an honourable and accountable government it would have resigned the moment the extent of its negligence became known. Ministers in other countries have resigned for lesser slip ups. Instead we have a cabinet that makes a perfunctory apology and even lets Eskom’s board to remain in place. The whole management team should have been fired on the spot and competent professionals sourced to fix their mess. Certainly their pay should have been cut.

Sadly we don’t have an honourable government that is accountable to the people.
