Frustrated with my lack of knowledge of MT

Ok, I am on a Movable Type kick again and I have been hunting for resources that could shed some light on how to migrate a WordPress blog to Movable Type. I have found a script which is supposed to do the trick but I just can’t figure out how to get it working such that it spits out an import file I can plug into Movable Type.

I thought I would take a look at the MT community forum and my biggest challenge was staying logged in long enough to post a query (which wasn’t actually posted because I was logged out).

I have asked this question many times before and I am going to ask it again. Does anyone know how to migrate from WordPress to Movable Type or even know a friend who knows a guy who did some stuff in Alaska after writing an obscure blog post referring to a geek chick who posted the magic solution on her blog? Anyone wanna help me out here and help another blogger cross to the Movable Type side? Anyone?

Update: Ok, I have almost literally eaten my own words. Shortly after I publish my sensationalist post claiming that the Movable Type community doesn’t love me, I got some MT love. I have therefore decided to change the title of my post to reflect what is probably the real issue here.

Thanks to my commentators for your tips and advice. I will knuckle down as soon as I have some time …

    Paul, why would you wish to dump WordPress in favour of MoveableType?

    Is it just to try it out?

    I migrated from MT to WordPress and it was incredibly easy. I haven't tried the other way around.

    I like the look of Movable Type 4.0.1 and I'd like to give it a go with one of my blogs. This one would be a good blog to convert to MT.

    I used to run MT as the CMS for my Jacobson Attorneys blog but had issues with its spam and comment handling. I am curious to see whether version 4.0.1 has improved that.

    I guess it does come down to trying it out … 😛

    Did you look at the MT distro first? There's a WXR importer plugin bundled with the thing.

    I did see something like that when I installed MT a little while ago although the import tool seemed to choke on the export file.

    Ok, so the next question I have is the best way to go about setting up the new MT install and moving across? Should I install MT in a subdirectory, set it up and then move it into the root folder?

    Yes, that is one of the typical courses. Depending on the resources at your disposal, sometimes I setup a new virtual web server and then just switch domain names to go live. That's probably not applicable for you though.

    Here are the instructions for the script. Sorry, I hadn't posted them on my projects blog.

    WordPress 2.3 support is a tad sketchy at the moment. I didn't test it much (just exported my MT blog, imported into WordPress, ran the script, reimported it and everything was fine for me.) Let me know if you have any bugs.

    Thanks Mike. The one thing you could add to your instructions for people like me is that the script's file extension should be changed to .php and then run in a browser. That will output the full archive.
