Google Maps Mobile

I have just been playing around with Google Maps Mobile and it is a pretty cool service, even though the map detail for South Africa isn’t fantastic. You really only see the major roads in the map view but the potential is certainly there. I have been trying it out with my Nokia N73 and I am pretty impressed. You use the service by downloading an application to your phone and installing it. When you start the application up it will give you a view of your city so in my case I saw an overview of Johannesburg.

I really love the fact that the service includes satellite imagery and it is really easy to navigate on your mobile device. I am using a normal 3G connection (not the faster HSDPA) and the images load pretty quickly. I’d like to see more detail in local maps so I could begin to use the service to navigate around South African cities and even find businesses and services using my mobile phone when I am out on the road.

There are a couple options available for various mobile devices including Symbian / Series 60 devices, Windows Mobile, Palm and even Blackberry users.
